Womenās Health, Perimenopause & Menopause
Womenās Health
Women deserve to understand their bodies better, know what is changing and have good options for support when things don't feel right.
Sometimes symptoms begin to appear without an obvious explanation. Periods become heavier or more painful, sleep changes, energy drops, anxiety creeps in, digestion becomes less reliable, headaches appear or you simply donāt feel quite like yourself.
Rather than treating each symptom as a separate problem, we look at what is happening across your health as a whole. Your cycle and hormones are part of the picture, but so are sleep, stress, nutrition, digestion, exercise, life stage and the demands being placed on your body.
The treatment I offer is tailored to what you need at the time. Acupuncture usually forms the foundation, with Chinese herbal medicine, nutritional support and other therapies incorporated where useful. The aim is not only to settle unwanted symptoms, but to help you feel stronger, more balanced and more able to enjoy each day.
Chinese Medicine & Womenās Heath
During the reproductive years, the menstrual cycle gives us a remarkable amount of information. When you ovulate, cycle length, the nature of the bleed, pain, PMS and changes across the month all provide clues about how well different body systems are working together.
Chinese medicine gives us a framework for interpreting those clues and, importantly, deciding what to do with them. A painful period, for example, isn't simply labelled as period pain. We look at the nature and timing of the pain, circulation, digestion, stress, energy, sleep and other signs to understand what may be contributing to it.
The same applies when cycles become irregular, PMS becomes difficult, ovulation is inconsistent or you simply don't feel well at particular points in your cycle. There may be different patterns driving what looks like the same problem, which is why treatment is individualised rather than based on the symptom alone.
Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine give us practical ways to work with these patterns. Depending on what we find, treatment may focus on improving circulation, supporting energy and recovery, settling an overactive stress response, addressing digestive function or helping the body move more smoothly through the hormonal changes of the menstrual cycle.
The goal is to understand what your particular pattern is telling us and use that information to help your body function more comfortably and reliably throughout the month.
Perimenopause & Menopause
Symptoms during perimenopause vary enormouslyāfrom physical and hormonal changes to shifts in mood, sleep, cognition and nervous-system functionāand can be influenced by a multitude of external factors.
The goal of treatment is to support your body to be more responsive and adaptable to change. Chinese medicine gives us a framework for identifying where that adaptability may have become compromised.
For example, a common Chinese medicine diagnosis is Qi stagnation. In practical terms, this can describe a situation where certain body functions are no longer operating as smoothly as they need to under increased physiological or emotional load. Another common pattern is Yin deficiency, which may present as a more reactive nervous system alongside heat, dryness, disturbed sleep or other signs of increased inflammatory activity.
These aren't labels that every woman in perimenopause receives. Effective treatment is about identifying the particular patterns at play in your version of perimenopause and using those findings to decide what may help.
Sometimes the body needs strengthening; sometimes calming or settling. Sometimes we need to improve circulation, support sleep, address nutritional deficiencies or reduce the load being placed on an already stretched system. Acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine and nutritional support give us different ways to do this.
The aim is not to fight the transition into menopause, but to help your body move through it with greater stability, resilience and easeāand find a new normal that feels good to live in.
